Berlin moving checklist: your eight-week plan
A move in Berlin often becomes stressful because of deadlines rather than heavy lifting: ending a tenancy, arranging parking and registering at the Bürgeramt. Work through this checklist in order so that moving day is reserved for the tasks your moving team will handle.
Eight weeks before: contracts and dates
- Check your tenancy notice immediately. The usual notice period for tenants is three months; an eight-week checklist does not replace that deadline. A replacement tenant only shortens the notice if the landlord agrees or your contract permits it.
- Choose a moving date and request quotes. Teams book up quickly around the beginning and end of the month.
- Request leave for moving day and, if possible, the day after.
- If the move is work-related, clarify employer reimbursement and keep receipts.
Six weeks before: declutter and estimate volume
Every cubic metre you leave behind saves time and money. Go room by room, starting with the cellar, storage room and balcony, where forgotten belongings often accumulate.
Use these approximate box quantities as a starting point:
| Household | Moving boxes | Small book boxes |
|---|---|---|
| One person / studio | 15–25 | 3–5 |
| Two people / two rooms | 30–45 | 5–10 |
| Family / three or four rooms | 50–80 | 10–20 |
- Plan disposal of bulky waste and old furniture: arrange a BSR collection or book a clearance service.
- Sell or give away unwanted items through Kleinanzeigen and neighbourhood groups.
- Order boxes, bubble wrap and packing tape.
Four weeks before: authorities, providers and address changes
- Arrange the transfer of internet and phone services. Allow four to six weeks as a planning buffer, particularly if an installation appointment is required.
- Notify your electricity and gas providers or arrange new contracts.
- Set up mail forwarding with Deutsche Post.
- Update your address with your bank, insurers, employer, health insurer, nursery or school, subscriptions and vehicle registration office.
- Book a Bürgeramt appointment for address registration early; appointment availability in Berlin can be limited.
Two weeks before: parking permits and first boxes
- Arrange temporary no-stopping zones for both addresses if required. Allow at least ten working days; we can handle the application and signs.
- Reserve the lift if possible, notify the building manager and speak to neighbours.
- Start with cellar contents, decorations, books and seasonal clothes. Label boxes with their destination room and contents.
- Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in larger boxes.
- Prepare vehicle address updates and any resident parking permit needed in the new neighbourhood.
Moving week: the final preparations
- Defrost the fridge and freezer at least 24 hours before moving.
- Disconnect the washing machine safely and fit its transit bolts according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Pack a first-night box: bedding, towels, chargers, medication, basic tools and coffee.
- Carry valuables, important documents and keys yourself.
- Record and photograph electricity, gas and water meter readings.
- Check the reserved parking area and access for the truck.
Moving day and afterwards
- Complete an apartment handover report and take photos of every room.
- Hand over all keys and record their receipt in the handover report.
- At the new home, prioritise the bed and kitchen; other items can wait.
- Register your new address at the Bürgeramt within two weeks of moving in, as required by German registration law.
- Keep invoices and receipts, particularly for a work-related move.
If you would rather leave the moving-day work to one team, we can handle packing, disassembly, transport and reassembly, plus clearance of the old apartment on request.
Frequently asked questions
When must I register my new address in Berlin?
Register at the Bürgeramt within two weeks of moving in. You generally need your identity document, the registration form and the landlord’s confirmation, called a Wohnungsgeberbestätigung. Check the official document list and book early.
How early should I arrange a no-stopping zone?
Allow at least ten working days, preferably three weeks, as a planning buffer. We can apply for the zone and arrange installation of the signs in accordance with the permit.
How many moving boxes will I need?
As a rough guide, allow 15–25 boxes for one person in a studio, 30–45 for two people and 50–80 for a family in a three- or four-room apartment. Pack books in small book boxes.
What should go in a first-night box?
Bedding, towels, toilet paper, toiletries, medication, chargers, a small tool kit, coffee and snacks, plus basic cleaning products.
